I started my business Felicity Bristow Studio in 2012 (originally called But n Ben Bindery & Press) after falling in love with hand binding books and printmaking while on the part-time BA in Art & Design course at Edinburgh College of Art.
Over the years since then I have completed short courses and workshops discovering the beauty of how a book is constructed and printed in, the book form has become an integral part of my creative practice as well – exploring the idea of the book in abstract and working with both small and large scale site specific installations. After I left Architectural practice in 2008 I spent time working as a graphic designer and social media assistant for several local magazines and arts organisations in Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders. The most recent exciting graphic design project was to design a set of book covers for a new publishing imprint in the Scottish Borders run by the super talented writer and publisher Jules Horne of TextHouse in Kelso.
I love making hand bound books. There is something very meditative about making blank books, and satisfying also as the process is so absorbing and the custom colours and sizes allow me to wonder about the work the artists and designers who use them – what will they make? Everyone has a preference for a size that suits them (square, portrait, landscape), whether for jotting a few notes down to stuff in a pocket on the go or sketching en plein air in a larger chunkier style with lovely heavy water colour paper.
